Soda Pop Stop

15 Sep

Chow released a great mini-documentary on a shop in LA that exclusively carries soda – Galco’s Soda Pop Stop! Indie soda lovers can order online through Galco’s site.

The documentary is about 12 minutes long and is worth every minute for a gander.

It started as an Italian grocery over a hundred years ago, but the love of soda from the current owner – John Nese – moved him to completely change gears and inventory.

Nese also makes some great comments on glass bottles, high fructose corn syrup (cane sugar is the way to go!), and diet drinks.

Ukulele Cake

12 Sep

Over a year ago, I took the Wilton Decorating Basics course. As part of the course, we had to make and decorate a “character cake”, i.e. those shaped pans that are all the rage these days.

My husband is a musician, so what better choice than the guitar cake pan
? I was feeling lazy so I used a boxed cake mix. This is what you’ll need then for the cake portion:

Follow the box directions:

See that cake release? With that, hopefully you will get a clean result, like this:

There, wasn’t that easy? Cake release is great for these types of pans. They prevent sticking, which will make your cake look sad. Sad cakes, although yummy, are more cake wrecky. We like happy cakes here.

Now for the frosting; I made enough as described on the Wilton box instructions.

This is where I left for class and started icing there. I got a good percentage done at class, but not all of it. I brought the rest home for my husband to help me on.

Frets. Husband marked where the frets should go by putting indentations in the fret board with a straight edge, then piped in the stripe.

Lookin’ yum so far.

Next are the strings. Other than size, another difference between guitars and ukuleles are the number of strings. Ukes have four strings. Easy for us, less piping!

We piped them on and here’s our final product. It’s almost precisely to size to an ukulele. And, it was delicious.

Mocafe Chai Drink Mix

1 Sep

how about a cup of heavenly Chai this Sunday afternoon?
I’m a fan of chai tea, ever since it started growing in popularity 5-10 years ago. A quick trip to wikipedia reveals to us that “chai” is actually the word for tea in many south-asian countries. As a result, saying “chai tea” is a bit of a redundancy – what we refer to is more specifically “masala chai”.

Of course, the drink I enjoy is thoroughly westernized and probably tastes nothing like the real deal. Oh, how I relish my $4 iced chai tea lattes (er… masala chai) from Panera. A local chain also has a great brew of the beverage.

Mocafe Chai Drink Mix

Now I’ve always been a bit tight-fisted with my money, but since I’ve been laid-off I’ve been stepping up by cutting out my Panera chais and Starbucks fraps. I stumbled upon this Mocafe chai drink mix at Marshall’s for $3.99 – for 10 servings per container that brings my drink to 39¢ a pop. A happy checkbook indeed.

You can get it at Amazon in boxes of 4 tins for about 48¢ a serving with their subscribe & save option. This way I can get my treat without the dread on my pocketbook! I’ll probably wait to see it at Marshall’s again, but I’m glad I can find it online if I run out and need a fix.

For a more serious from-scratch chai, check out this impressive concoction. It looks pretty intense – I’m not sure if my tastebuds can handle that!

Hearts and Flowers Candy Box

26 Aug

I’m in love.

I’m a newlywed, of course I’m in love :o) but I’m also in love with candy melts.
Candy Molds
Oh candy melts. How many shapes you take on, may I count the ways?
Candy Molds
I shop at Bake It Pretty to buy my melts and my molds. You can follow the instructions on their blog on how to melt the candy. It’s a bit easier with these larger molds – you can just pour the melted candy into the molds rather than having to mess with the piping.

As you can see I had some trouble getting the leaves and flower precisely on key. I would avoid tapping the mold once you fill these portions, as any movement will prevent a clean leaf/flower structure. Obviously pour in the colored portion first and then the white (or any other color) after you’ve filled your leaves and flowers.

Take photos before eating :)

A tip on this one, I used candy bark instead of candy melts for the white, because this baby takes a T-O-N of melts. Well, dearies. The candy bark, although excellent for a thin coating on strawberries and the like, is not so tasty in this thick melt. Or at least my Kroger brand on-clearance white bark wasn’t. So, I recommend either to infuse a flavoring or mix candy melts with candy bark.

Yum!
